Opinion: Buckhead cityhood an ill-advised idea

When I was mayor of Atlanta more than 50 years ago, with a larger population but smaller budget, I set about becoming part of every organization of record, from the Fraternal Order of Police to the American Civil Liberties Union.

I learned fast that the place I could best influence opinion was personal contact with the masses.

Since retiring a year ago, I have purposely shied away from any civic controversy.

However, the current ill-advised proposal to make the Buckhead community a separate city has excited me to reiterate my longstanding opposition to such.

I don’t want to see our city cut into several slices, believing that — in the long range — it would degrade the quality of life of the new creations and the remaining citizens.
